A Song For Spooky Season: Father's House

It's that time again. I'm not a big holiday guy, but I'm always stoked when autumn arrives. Like I stated in a previous blahg, there's something about everything perishing all around that makes you want to breathe a bit deeper.

This song def was written sometime around October 2015. Fucking hell, it's 11 years old already? Another 10 years and this tune can go get me a six pack of beer down the street.

It started as a thing I recorded using some synthy strings. It was eerie, symphonic and sort of put me in the mindset of Lee Hazlewood. So then I wanted it to be a duet, because that made sense.

I actually had the vocal melody before I had the lyrics, which is always nice. You get to know what kind of pentameter you're shooting for or whatever. That helps.

Because it was so creepy sounding, I figured the lyrics had to be of a darker variety. At some point, I figured it would be cool to make it a murder ballad, but with the roles swapped. If you look at songs from before the Great Depression (and sure, after too) you'll notice that there is an overwhelming amount of violence in those songs. In what Greil Marcus called the “old, weird America”, more often than not a young man would lead a lovely maiden into the woods to murder her for no reason whatsoever.

I know I'm not the first to do this, of course, but regardless I set out to even the score for young maidens in murder ballads everywhere. As far as a recorded version goes, I know I have some odd demos kicking around the archives somewhere, but just come out and see me and tell me to play it live. I'll be happy to play it for you. Maybe I'll at least find a vid of me playing Father's House live somewhere. Stay tuned, loons.

So I present to you the lyrics to Father's House, in honor of Spooky Season. Fine, and because I haven't blahg'd in a minute...I mean, who the shit reads these anyway? So here's a nice little murder ballad where she gets him this time, with an assist from autoerotic asphyxiation and some supernatural figure. The other ride, if you will.

Father's House

(him)

In your father's house we'll do

What we've been waiting for

He had a party, he had some games

Now everyone's outdoors

(her)

He'll go with his men on into town

For a couple of hours

For when he doesn't get his way

We'll be getting ours

(both)

Getting off

Vision soft

I see us choking in the loft

Intense, the mortal clash

(him)

Figure stalking around the room

Last seen over there

A figure writhing through the wall

Now I can't find the air

(her)

When I awoke I heard that voice

No babe, it wasn't yours

Opaque's the cloak that swaddles my soul

Lust, my trusty lure

(both)

There's no light

It's still bright

Blood is flowing oh so slight

Now they'll find only one

(her)

Just remain on the brink

There's no letter, just the ink

Think they'll get the idea?

There's a light oh so bright

Blood is flowing not so slight

My other ride is here…..
