JUKE TANNINS: CURATED ACOUSTIC ATMOSPHERE
100% Analog | No iPads or Backing Tracks
Beer and Wine Pairings:
Music is about ingredients and context. You wouldn’t serve a heavy Cabernet on a hot patio, and you wouldn’t pour a light Lager while contemplating life in a dark corner. Because I perform entirely from a mental vault of over 900 songs, I read the room and tailor the setlist to the exact environment. Here is a sample of what is currently breathing in the glass and pouring from the taps.
PART I: THE SONIC FLIGHT DECK
(Curated for Breweries, Taprooms, and Patios)
1. THE CRISP PILSNER / LAGER
Profile: Clean, fast, high carbonation, low stress.
🎵 The Covers: "The Race Is On" (George Jones) & "Surrender" (Cheap Trick)
Notes: Fast, acoustic-driven staples that wake up the room, keep the energy light, and they pair perfectly with a cold pint on a warm day as is.
🎵 The Original: "Evaporating"
Notes: A breezy, sun-baked track about navigating the summer haze, aging, and a kiss at the end of it all. Refreshing, rhythmic, and perfect for the first round. Pairs well with: Whatever it is that college kids are going on about these days, watermelon, pool parties.
2. THE HAZY / JUICY IPA
Profile: Unfiltered, fruit-forward, loose, crowd-pleaser.
🎵 The Covers: "Let It Bleed" (The Rolling Stones) & "Marie Marie" (The Blasters)
Notes: Loose, country and rockabilly-infused, and fun. Tracks that go down incredibly smooth. Pairs well with: Steel guitar engagements, playing guitar on the back porch, and of course, most foods.
🎵 The Original: "There, There, There"
Notes: Rowdy and unapologetic. It has that messy, rhythmic swagger that sits right in the pocket of a busy beer garden. It's about what happens after a night filled with the right kind of wrongdoing. This song pairs best with: A solid alibi and some onion rings. Ranch or ketchup optional.
3. THE WEST COAST IPA
Profile: Piney, biting, classic structure, sharp finish.
🎵 The Covers: "The Apartment Song" (Tom Petty) & "Burning House Of Love" (X)
Notes: Roadhouse-conjuring, guitar-forward, and timeless. Open chords that ring out clearly over the noise of a crowded bar. Keeps the dancers dancing, and the foot-tappers tapping. These go down best with almost any chicken sandwich you can think of.
🎵 The Original: "Basher Is The One To Beat"
Notes: A driving tribute to pub-rock legend Nick Lowe. Built on a sharp power-pop hook with a melodic, malty finish. Try this with some loaded tater tots or fries!
4. THE IMPERIAL STOUT
Profile: Dark, heavy, roasted, best sipped slowly.
🎵 The Covers: "Love In Vain" (Robert Johnson) & "Poison Heart" (The Ramones)
Notes: Menacing, melodic, and heavy. Story-driven, blues-soaked tracks that slow the tempo down, but not too much. Chugging. Pair this with: A good convo with better people, smoked meats.
🎵 The Original: "Runnemede"
Notes: A gritty, hyper-realistic story about a roadside motel and its surroundings. It’s thick, dark, and rooted in classic Americana. There are a few options of what to pair with a stout, but the song itself pairs best with either a chicken parm sub or an Italian roast pork sandwich (with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe).
5. THE SOUR / WILD ALE
Profile: Funky, tart, complex, for the adventurous palate.
🎵 The Covers: "Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" (The Pogues) & "Alison" (Elvis Costello) & “When You Were Mine” (Prince)
Notes: A mix of Celtic grit and cynical balladry, and some Minneapolis pop/funk to top it all off . Distinct flavors for a crowd that wants something outside the standard Top 40. Try pairing with: whatever you wish. It's your special day and you have a beer in front of you!
🎵 The Original: "Joyce, Water, and the Arranger"
Notes: A surreal story involving a pet rat and a cup of sangria, an earth/space disconnect, and an arranger with some questionable intentions. It’s highly specific, dark-humored, and completely distinct. Pairs well with: Tacos. All of 'em.
PART II: THE VINTAGE RESERVE
(Curated for Wineries, Estates, and Listening Rooms)
1. SPARKLING / BLANC DE BLANCS
Profile: Effervescent, bright, celebratory.
🎵 The Covers: "This Must Be The Place" (Talking Heads) & "Our Day Will Come" (Ruby & The Romantics)
Notes: Acoustic art-pop and retro soul. Rhythmically steady, light, and optimistic. Try pairing with: Beautiful views of vineyards.
🎵 The Original: "Incidental Summer"
Notes: A driving, breezy road-trip song that keeps the mood moving forward.
2. SAUVIGNON BLANC / PINOT GRIGIO
Profile: Crisp, refreshing, energetic, sharp.
🎵 The Covers: "Right Down The Line" (Gerry Rafferty) & "Magnet And Steel" (Walter Egan)
Notes: Smooth, 70s gold. These tracks provide a sophisticated, steady groove that warms up the afternoon. Pairs best with an afternoon with friends. Oh, and goat cheese.
🎵 The Original: "Cool Spring Eve"
Notes: Subtle, observant, and quiet. The sonic equivalent of a cool breeze on a warm afternoon. Pairs best with: A stroll during…you guessed it: A cool spring eve, preferably after ingesting the perfect amount of wine.
3. PROVENÇAL ROSÉ
Profile: Floral, dangerously drinkable, day-drinking perfection.
🎵 The Covers: "2 Kool 2 B Forgotten" (Lucinda Williams) & "I’ve Just Seen A Face" (The Beatles)
Notes: A mix of Southern Gothic drawl and brisk, breathless folk-pop energy. They bring a driving but sophisticated breeze to the patio. Suggested pairings: Fun, fish, cheese, tapenade, leaning over the railing of a bridge of your choosing.
🎵 The Original: "Ben Franklin Bridge 7:38"
Notes: An upbeat, sprightly waltz about the morning commute and how it may or may not affect one's sanity. Pairs best with: FasTrak (E-Z Pass for you East Coasters), 65-85 degree days, and oddly enough….a cinnamon roll.
4. PINOT NOIR (The Sonoma Coast)
Profile: Earthy, elegant, seductive, moody.
🎵 The Covers: "My Baby Just Cares For Me" (Standard) & "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" (John Prine)
Notes: A deconstructed, smoky jazz standard paired with a rolling, warm Americana rhythm. Perfect for when the sun hits the horizon. Pairs well with: my own brand of story songs that some refer to as Coastal Noir, and of course, mushroom risotto.
🎵 The Original: "Sister Nite Eyes Released"
Notes: A Bossa Nova-tinged story about misty mornings and hangovers. It sits in that pocket between Jazz and Folk. Pairs best with: Margherita Pizza, preferably eaten in a bath tub after a lovely day.
5. SANGIOVESE / CHIANTI
Profile: Savory, complex, Old World romance.
🎵 The Covers: "Long Distance Love" (Little Feat) & "Killing The Blues" (Rowland Salley)
Notes: Soulful, aching grooves and timeless melodies. Heartbreaking but beautiful. Pair these with: Italian food. Lots and lots of Italian food. Find an Italian grandmother if you can. Pay her well, but don't let her have too much Chianti before she's done with most of the cooking.
🎵 The Original: "When This Is Over"
Notes: A highly observant track exploring suburban malaise. It pairs beautifully with a savory, reflective glass of wine. Pair with: mid-life ennui, pizza, a burger, and if you're a cat… a blue jay.
6. CABERNET SAUVIGNON (The Napa Valley)
Profile: Big structure, dark, heavy, age-worthy.
🎵 The Covers: "Tower of Song" (Leonard Cohen) & "Nighttime" (Big Star)
Notes: Monolithic songs for the true vinyl aficionados. They demand full attention and sound like they’ve been aging in oak. Try with: Anything and everything. If it's not working, you'll know. But you can't go wrong with a ribeye or filet, some Bolognese, or some gouda.
🎵 The Original: "The Sad Exclamation Misses The Point"
Notes: An epic centerpiece. A surreal, structured narrative that provides darker textures for when the stars finally come out. Pair with: A meatball sub, a long chat via text with a sibling, a sunset that takes its sweet time.
